Diverse Abilities, Shared Dreams:
Nurturing Special Needs Children in Schools"
On behalf of Dorji, a grade one student and more like him.
I want to share with you the
happiness I feel at school, where my dreams and wishes start to take shape.
Every morning when I arrive at school, I can't help but smile because it's a
place filled with friends and my favourite teacher. Their warm greetings and
kind smiles make me feel like I truly belong. Learning, when it's made fun, is
the best part. I love how my teacher makes our lessons exciting. It feels like
we're playing and learning at the same time, and that's when I am at my
happiest. When I tackle something new or learn to draw, an overwhelming
sense of joy rushes over me. My friends and teacher celebrate my achievements
with claps and cheers, turning every accomplishment into a big party. Even
though learning may be a little challenging sometimes, the happiness and
support I receive from my school remind me that I can overcome anything, and
that's what makes me really, really happy.
My Struggles in Learning:
But learning also has its tough
moments for me. Reading and writing don't come as easily to me as they do to
some of my friends. Words sometimes look all jumbled up, and it can get really
frustrating. My hands don't always want to write neatly, no matter how hard I
try. When there's a lot of noise and kids talking at once, it can be
overwhelming, and that's when I need a little break. I know that I need to practice
a bit more than my friends to get better at some things, and that can be tough
too. But here's the thing: even though I face these challenges, my school
doesn't give up on me. They understand that I learn differently, and they're
okay with that. They help me through special plans just for me. With my
school's support, I know that I can tackle these hurdles and keep moving
forward.
Dreams and Wishes:
Now, let me share a little secret
with you. I have dreams and wishes just like everyone else. I dream of becoming
really good at reading and writing, and one day, I hope to write my own
stories. I also dream of making friends easily and talking with them
confidently. My wishes are simple but important to me. I wish for more moments
of happiness at school, more moments when I figure out something new, and more
moments when my friends and teacher celebrate my accomplishments. I wish for
patience and understanding when things get tough, and I wish for the courage to
keep trying, even when it's hard. My biggest dream is that one day, I'll be
able to say, "I did it!" and feel proud of myself. And with my
school's love, support, and a little bit of hard work, I believe those dreams
and wishes will come true.
In our roles as educators, we
carry a profound responsibility to support and embrace the unique journey of
every special needs child within our community. It is our duty to create
environments that radiate exclusivity, patience, and empathy, fostering a space
where these incredible individuals can truly thrive. By customising our
teaching approaches, celebrating their every achievement, and encouraging their
self-advocacy, we empower them to overcome obstacles and chase their dreams.
Collaboration, both within our teaching teams and with parents and specialists,
is key to providing the holistic support these children deserve. Equally
important is our commitment to ongoing professional development, ensuring we
remain equipped with the latest knowledge and strategies. Together, we have the
power to nurture their strengths, boost their self-confidence, and guarantee
that they not only excel academically but also feel profoundly valued and
cherished in our classrooms and communities
